Your job will be dug out to allow for at least 100mm(4inch) of a solid stone loose aggregate sub-base. However if when we dig the ground and the ground seems soft we may decide it needs additional aggregate on small jobs however on larger jobs this may be charged extra. The aggregate is compacted using a heavy duty roller or wacker(vibrating plate) over and over, back and forth, up and down, side to side, are required to ensure a given depth of aggregate is compacted as thoroughly as possible, what is referred to as 'Compaction To refusal', the point at which the aggregate simply won't compact any further. We then add the sand usually 20-30mm and repeat the process. We then screed the sand using a large level taking our time as this needs to stay compacted and governs the final leval of the blocks. We then lay the blocks following the customers proposed pattern. We then sweep in kiln dried sand and give one final wacker to ensure compaction and the job is complet.
Having worked in this industry for years I am unfortunately well aware of cowboys cutting corners. We often go to put jobs right for customers who have had bad experience. I can assure you we do everything above industry standards and can thankfully say I am yet to have a call back from any customers with a problem. All our cuts our done with a disc cutter and to a very high standard, a lot in our industry think a block cutter is ok to use and although it may look ok when the job is passed over due to the sand in the joints, one heavy rain and the jagged edges stand out like a sore thumb.
If you looking for permeable paving look no further. The process is basically the same just there is a small gap between the blocks and we don’t use any sand to ensure no water sits on the surface. Its usually recommend on larger public areas as I’ve laid it on new estates roads or car parks however some times can be suitable for a domestic property to solve surface water problems.
